Treatedwastewaterposesnogreaterhealthrisksthanexistingwatersuppliesand,insomecases,maybeevensafertodrink,accordingtoareportreleasedbytheNationalResearchCouncil.“Webelievewaterreuseisanoptiontodealwithgrowingwaterscarcity,especiallyincoastalareas,”saysJorgDrewes,anengineeringprofessorattheColoradoSchoolofMines.“Thiscanbedonereliablywithoutputtingthepublicatrisk,”hesays,citingtechnologicaladvances.Hesaysit’sawastenottoreusethenation’swastewater,becausealmostallofitistreatedbeforedischarge.Thiswaterincludesstormrunoff(径流)aswellasusedwaterfromhomes,businessandfactories.
Inmanyplaces,thereportsays,thepublicdoesnotrealizeit’sdrinkingwaterthatwastreatedafterbeingdischargedaswastewatersomewhereupstream.Forexample,wastewaterdischargedintotheTrinityRiverfromDallas/FortWorthflowssouthintoLakeLivingston,thesourceforHouston’sdrinkingwater.
